Intel-Powered Mac Era Ends with macOS 27

Intel-Powered Mac Era Ends with macOS 27

macOS 27 says goodbye to Macs with Intel processors. In its statement before WWDC26, Apple confirmed that Intel support will end and the last current version is macOS Tahoe.

Apple is nearing the end of its long-standing transition process. The new generation operating system macOS 27, which is expected to be introduced at the WWDC26 event to be held on June 8, 2026, means the end of the road for Intel-based Mac models. The company is to officially cut software support for computers preparing with Intel processors, in line with its strategy focusing on its own silicon chips (Apple Silicon).

This development means the end of an era in terms of operating system updates for users of Intel processor-powered devices that have been working with high performance for years.

  • Intel Support Completely Ends:The macOS 27 operating system cannot be installed on any Mac model with an Intel processor; Apple is now focusing entirely on its own produced chips.

  • Last Stop macOS Tahoe:The last version offering the current operating system supplement for Mac users with Intel processors will remain the current macOS Tahoe.

  • Affected Models:Hardware such as MacBook Pro (2019 and 2020 models), iMac (2020) and Mac Pro (2019) will no longer receive new macOS updates.

Apple’s Silicon Transformation and the Future of Intel Macs

Apple has maximized the harmony of hardware and software by switching to its own processor architecture (M series) since 2020. While this transformation process enabled software-side optimizations to be made faster, it caused Intel-based devices to remain in the background. In recent years, the fact that some features were reserved only for Macs with Apple Silicon processors signaled this distinction. Now, with macOS 27, this process is taken one step further and the reliance on Intel architecture is completely terminated.

Which Models Will No Longer Receive Updates?

Apple has previously confirmed that macOS Tahoe will be the last major version that can be installed on Macs with Intel processors. This shows that even the most powerful Intel processor models on the market have now reached a “software limit”. In particular, the following devices will not be updated with macOS 27:

  • MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)

  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, with four Thunderbolt 3 ports)

  • iMac (2020)

  • Mac Pro (2019)

These models represent the last mass with which Apple bids farewell to Intel architecture. Although owners of the devices in question can continue to use their devices, they will be deprived of the new security patches, performance improvements and original features that will come with macOS 27.

What’s Changing for Users?

This news is an important milestone, especially for high-end Mac users who are used for business purposes and are expected to have a long life. Apple’s strategy is quite clear: In an ecosystem where the future is built on Apple Silicon architecture, Intel-based hardware now falls behind the performance and efficiency standards required by contemporary operating systems.

In order to benefit from current security and features, users will need to switch to a new Apple Silicon-based model in the future. When the innovations that macOS 27 will bring are officially announced at the WWDC26 event, it will be clearer how Apple will manage this transition and what kind of future awaits users.
