Sony has decided to delete PSN accounts that have not been used for 3 years. Details about this new rule, which also affects digital game licenses, are in our news.
Sony continues to impress players with its new decisions for the PlayStation platform. In particular, the plan to stop physical disc production as of 2028 has been criticized by a wide range of users.
While the reactions to this strategy change continued, a new update to PlayStation terms of service attracted attention. The company has introduced a new restriction for user accounts that have been inactive for a long time.
PSN accounts that have not been used for 3 years will be deleted
PlayStation’s updated terms of service state that PSN accounts that have not been used for 36 months will be closed. When accounts are closed at the end of this process, access to all digital games and other content linked to the relevant account is completely canceled.
Sony plans to send an informative e-mail to users before the account deletion process. Players are given a 6-month grace period to respond to this e-mail and request that their accounts remain open.
However, if no response is made within the specified period, the account is permanently closed. This means that the licenses for all digital games, downloadable content and movies purchased from the store will also be lost.
Reactions to physical media are growing
Sony’s new digitally focused approach creates concern, especially among players who collect physical games. The majority of users oppose the end of physical media production, arguing that this decision restricts consumers’ control over their purchases.
The petition launched against the company’s strategy change quickly exceeded 90,000 signatures. Some players state that they are considering moving away from the PlayStation platform following these developments.
The issue of protecting physical media is becoming more critical than ever in the digitalized gaming world. What do you think about Sony’s new terms of service and digitalization policy?
