Police Can Track iPhone and AirPods Signals

Police Can Track iPhone and AirPods Signals

Leonardo’s new SignalTrace system can track iPhones and other Bluetooth devices in public places using license plate reading cameras.

A new technology developed by Leonardo US Cyber and Security Solutions allows law enforcement to monitor Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals in public areas. This system, called SignalTrace, aims to collect digital traces of individual electronic devices by integrating with existing license plate recognition cameras.

The system detects signals emitted from devices such as iPhones, smart watches and fitness trackers and matches this information with license plate information. In this way, authorities can track the movements of certain individuals or the travel patterns of groups of people by creating a digital fingerprint.

How does SignalTrace technology work?

Leonardo states that the SignalTrace system does not read or decrypt device contents. The company states that the information collected is used only in accordance with the request of law enforcement authorities.

However, there is no mention of any legal search warrant requirement for the use of the system. Experts predict that a private company’s retention of such a wide range of personal information and lack of control will lead to legal disputes.

A new era in surveillance technologies

This new version of the system, previously known as Elsag EOC Plug, draws attention with its ability to identify people via Bluetooth. The company’s previous generation license plate recognition technologies are currently used by approximately 4 thousand different institutions in more than 25 countries.

The Electronic Border Foundation has reported that previous license plate tracking systems were used to monitor protest activities. Although it is not clear whether any state has purchased this new system, the increase in surveillance capacity increases the concerns of non-governmental organizations.

How do you think the use of such tracking technologies in public spaces affects individual privacy rights?
