Although PlayStation 5 hardware has been proven to run PS3 games fluently via Linux, Sony continues to not offer native support.
More than five years have passed since the launch of PlayStation 5 in late 2020, and it has become possible to run Linux on devices with outdated system software. This development has paved the way for many interesting applications, such as turning the current generation Sony console into a complete emulation monster.
The latest test accomplished by a user once again reveals the hardware power of the console.
Smooth Native PS3 Experience with PlayStation 5
Shortly after developer Andrew Nguyen released the Linux installer online, X user Retropierdolnik posted a PS3 game on PlayStation 5 via the RPCS3 emulator. Motorstorm Pacific RiftHe shared a video of himself operating the .
In fact, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen PS5 hardware run PS3 games smoothly. In 2024, a test with the AMD BC-250, a mining card with PS5 silicon, confirmed that the system could smoothly run emulated PS3 games at even higher than native resolution.

Sony’s Silence and Cloud Gaming Limitation
The fact that the hardware is so adequate makes Sony’s inaction on bringing native PlayStation 3 games to the system even more surprising. As of now, third-generation PlayStation (PS3) games can only be played on the system via cloud gaming, which doesn’t always provide a great experience.
The company’s silence and inaction on this issue shows that local emulation projects, which were allegedly previously researched and prototyped by Implicit Conversions, are also going nowhere.
What do you think about Sony offering PS3 games only through the cloud system and not providing local emulation support, even though PS5 has this power in terms of hardware? Don’t forget to express your thoughts in the comments section below.
