WhatsApp Won’t Work on These Android Phones

WhatsApp Won’t Work on These Android Phones

WhatsApp will discontinue support for versions below Android 6.0 as of September 8, 2026. Details of the changes awaiting Android 5.0 and 5.1 users are in our news.

WhatsApp officially announced that it will end support for old Android operating systems as of September 2026 in order to modernize its technological infrastructure and offer new generation features to all users. Within the scope of this radical decision, which will come into force on September 8, 2026, devices with operating systems older than Android 6.0 will no longer be able to access WhatsApp.

This update, which will directly affect millions of users, especially those using Android 5.0 and 5.1 versions, is considered a critical necessity for the company to raise security standards and maintain performance improvements.

  • WhatsApp will stop supporting versions before Android 6.0 as of September 8, 2026.
  • As a result of this decision, devices with Android 5.0 and 5.1 operating systems will lose access to the application.
  • There will be no changes to current system requirements for iOS and iPadOS users.
  • It is recommended that users back up their chats via Google Drive or local storage to avoid data loss.

Devices using Android versions 5.0 and 5.1 will completely lose access to WhatsApp in September 2026.

New Features Require Higher System Requirements

WhatsApp continues to work on modern features like notification bubbles to improve user experience. In order for such innovations to work smoothly, more up-to-date system architectures and high performance standards are needed.

The company states that old hardware and software have difficulty keeping up with these new technologies. Since this incompatibility hinders the overall development of the platform, it becomes inevitable to discontinue support for older versions.

Today, while the Android ecosystem is moving towards Android 17, there is still a significant audience around the world using old devices. Especially in India, Brazil, Pakistan, Southeast Asia and African countries, old phones that are no longer updated by manufacturers are widely preferred. Although WhatsApp made this decision by analyzing usage data, the transition process may be difficult for low-budget device owners.

The company warns users to be prepared with warning messages sent from within the application.

Before support is discontinued, users are advised to back up their chat history via Google Drive to preserve it. For users with insufficient cloud storage space, the option of backing up the device’s local memory and manually transferring this file to a new device is also offered. These measures aim to minimize the inconvenience of users before the outage that will occur on September 8, 2026.

Apple Users Are Not Affected in Any Way by the Current Update

Despite this radical change on the Android side, no restrictions are foreseen on the iOS front. WhatsApp; It will continue to support Apple devices running iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1 or newer. This confirms that the September 2026 restriction is a regulation specific to the Android ecosystem only.
