Google introduced new gradient design icons for Gmail and Workspace applications. Here are the details of the new icons and design changes.
Google is undergoing a comprehensive visual renewal process for its applications under the Workspace umbrella. The company is updating the icons of many popular applications, including Gmail, with a new design approach.
This new design language is based on the gradient effects previously seen in Google G, Gemini, Home, Photos and Maps icons. This visual choice aims to emphasize the presence of artificial intelligence-supported features in applications.
Key Features of the New Design
Google is taking into account criticism of the previous icon set and offering a more distinct distinction in color and shape. The rule of using four company colors together, which was mandatory in the previous generation, is abandoned with these new designs.
Background tiles used in many applications are removed, making icons look larger and unique. The Google Drive icon no longer contains the red color and matches the editor applications with its classic green, yellow and blue tones.
The dominant color usage continues in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides applications. While Docs maintains a vertical paper form, Sheets and Slides switch to a horizontal design that reflects the actual way the applications are used.
Google Meet is making a big break from its current design and adopting a video camera icon with a predominant yellow color. Google Chat, on the other hand, is being updated with a pill-shaped message bubble design with a smiley face detail.
Change in Gmail and Other Applications
While the letter M and the envelope form in the Gmail icon are preserved, the design gains more rounded lines. This new icon, in which red is dominant, stands out as the only option that also includes yellow, green and blue tones.

Google Calendar captures a nostalgic atmosphere by returning to its old flip-style design. The four-tone outer frame is removed and replaced with the classic blue tone.
The Google Tasks icon features a button view that represents a completed reminder. Google Keep removes the background and focuses on a detailed light bulb icon.

Google Voice is being updated with a more rounded phone icon. Google Forms and Sites applications, on the other hand, abandon the paper motif and use new visual elements such as multiple choice bubbles and lighter shades of blue.
